Goner To Release Ausmuteants ‘Amusements’ In US April 1st // “Tinnitus” Streaming On Pitchfork // Watch “No Motivation” via NOISEY

Ausmuteants Amusements
US Release Date: April 1, 2014

Ausmuteants are four twenty-nothings from Geelong, Victoria raised on a diet of seminal avant punk like Chrome, the Screamers, and let’s not mention Devo. As a two-piece, Jake (synth, guitar) and Billy (drums) flushed that obsession with the release of the Split Personalities tape/CD in 2012.

They’ve since added Marc and Shaun on bass and guitar respectively and worked ’60s songwriting ideas, disco rhythms and a subtler brand of theft into finely crafted pop songs. In 2013 they hit the studio and recorded twenty-two tracks; the best twelve became Amusements.

Working in partnership with our pals at Aarght in Melbourne, Goner Records is proud to bring Amusements stateside for a proper US release.

Recent Press

Watch the video for “No Motivation” + read an interview with Jake from Ausmuteants by Daniel Stewart (Total Control, UV Race)

Ausmuteants’ approach to that word is more thoughtful. While they sing about how “every day ends up in misery”, they illustrate that feeling, which “lingers on and on and on”, by having their primary synth pulsate ad infinitum. They don’t place emphasis on volume or teeth—this is more about translating an omnipresent unpleasantness into a hook that sounds good when repeated over three minutes." - Evan Minsker, Pitchfork

At their best, like on “Hate This Town” and “Flushing Problems,” they have a light, uncertain, stoic post-punk pride that feeds into DC’s Rev Summer crop, or better yet, the band that inspired them all – Empire, the fateful post-Gen X outfit." - Doug Mosurock, Still Single

Whether the choice of humor is surrealist, toilet or slapstick, post-punk frequently finds its tongue firmly in cheek with this Melbourne band." - Jhoni Jackson, MTV Iggy

Full of juvenile and puerile lyrics backed by a frantic fuzzed-out sound, it was as batshit as it was amazing." - Tim Scott, Mess+Noise

Listen to Ex-Cult’s “Midnight Passenger” via SPIN // 2nd LP Out April 29th

SPIN says:

"Ex-Cult emerged in 2012 with a self-titled debut album that SPIN described as "a weird, sometimes frightening set of tight-fisted proto-punk." The Memphis five-piece — led by Chris Shaw, formerly of local hardcore crew Vile Nation — followed that first full-length with a grueling tour schedule that saw them desecrate dive bars all over the U.S. Criss-crossing the country four times also helped Ex-Cult hone their breed of muscle-sludge into the 10 psych-slimed tracks found on Midnight Passenger, the band’s upcoming sophomore LP.

Recorded by Doug Easley (who also oversaw Ex-Cult’s “Mister Fantasy”/”Through the Blinds” 7-inch), Midnight Passenger won’t see the light until April 29, but Ex-Cult have unleashed the effort’s title track, a relentless mix of propeller-chop guitar, churning noise-rock squall, and monotone taunts.

Find “Midnight Passenger” below, followed by the album’s cover art and track list. Pre-orders of Midnight Passenger are currently available through Goner Records.”

Ex-Cult 2nd LP “Midnight Passenger” Coming April 29th

Ex-Cult’s Midnight Passenger is the result of a never ending obsession with the open road. It’s the sound of five people spending the last year in countless dive bars, disgusting motel rooms and on dozens of dirty floors.  Since recording with Ty Segall in 2012 the band hasn’t come up for air, putting four US tours and tons of weekend trips under their belt with the likes of OBN III’s, Captive and Ty Segall.

It was in these dive bars across the USA that Ex-Cult truly found their sound. While some of the songs were played for audiences as early as January of 2013, it wasn’t until a West Coast tour in June that the blue print for Midnight Passenger really started to take form. Taking pieces of every tour back home with them, the band began to hone a sound that captured the desperation of the first record, while being careful to integrate new techniques of negative noise.

Recorded by Doug Easley in January of 2014, Midnight Passenger is comprised of ten songs that were meant to be heard together, each one following a different, damaged storyline. The buzz-saw guitars, kraut rock rhythm section and sneering vocals are all still present, but with Midnight Passenger, Ex-Cult has added a few layers of psychedelic slime to their sound.
